Working together

CBT is an active form of therapy that requires collaborative working to develop a shared understanding of your problems and to explore a variety of different treatment techniques.
As a part of your therapy we may agree that you complete tasks in between sessions such as reading, keeping thought diaries, or experimenting with behavioural changes. Research shows that this ‘homework’ will improve the outcome of your therapy.
At each session, we will set an agenda together, review tasks completed during the week and work towards learning a new strategy or coping skill.

What to expect
The first appointment is an assessment of your difficulties over one or two sessions. The purpose of the assessment is to gain a shared understanding of your main issues, what you would like to work on and to establish your goals. Sessions are usually 50 minutes in duration and are held weekly.
CBT is a time-limited intervention. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommend between 6 and 20 sessions for most common mental health disorders. However, if clinically appropriate, the number of sessions can be extended.
Research shows that CBT is helpful for many people. Nevertheless, there are a number of other factors that play a significant role. Building a trusting therapeutic relationship, the motivation to change, completing homework tasks and practising newly acquired skills between sessions have been shown to lead to successful treatment outcomes.
